When it comes to food in Chicago, what comes to mind? Pizza and hot dogs . Both are great, but Chicago is often overlooked as a city that has one of the best burgers in the United States. To make a good burger, the burger must have lasting effects on eaters. I’ve had the pleasure of being able to try some of the best burgers in town. Here’s a list of what I think are the best burgers in Chicago.
Billy Goat Tavern
For over 80 years the Billy Goat Tavern has been a historic Burger spot in Chicago. Having a place in pop culture from cursing the Cubs and making an appearance on Saturday Night Live, the history is rich and deep. The Billy Goat Tavern though is a classic bar and burger joint that serves no-frills single, double, or even triple cheeseburgers on kaiser rolls. The environment will warp you back to a simpler time too.
The metal-themed bar and restaurant is known for its variety of thick, creative burgers that have been a staple of Chicago for years. Burger of the month specials are always happening, and the iconic “Ghost Burger” is topped with a communion wafer. This was the burger that started it all at Kuma’s Corner.
The award-winning diner founded by Brendan Sodikoff, was named best in the United States by Bon Appetit. The burgers stand as best example of a restaurateur bringing the thin, grilled, American classics into today’s world. The no-frills burger is made up of four-ounce patties, American Cheese, Dijonnaise, and pickles.
Since 1942, this south side spot is one of the last grease joints left in the city. Considered as one of the best, the burgers come in three sizes. The burgers are made exclusively of cow leg meat and topped with griddled onion pieces, American cheese, and some pickles on the side for a classic taste and look.
Nicky’s The real McCoy
Home of the iconic Big Baby, Nicky’s is the best place to enjoy this Chicago-only burger. The Big Baby is two griddled patties are sandwiched around American cheese. Instead of being placed over, rather than under pickles, ketchup, and mustard.
Along with the well-known salad bar, RJ Grunts burgers are two of best-known menu staples. The thin, stackable patties come with a variety of toppings that are hefty. hearty, and have drawn eaters of all ages for over 45 years.
Edzo’s Burger Shop
Known in Chicago for being the best local fast-casual burger in the area. Featured on the Eater 38, the smashed, grilled patties are full of quality and care from owner Eddie Lakin.
Utilizing local farm-raised produce, Slagel Farms beef is cooked on the signature, wood-fired grill. This is a perfect example of what happens when a highly acclaimed chef-driven restaurant makes a burger with all its might, yet stays within its concept.
